About

For over 160 years St. Michael’s College School has been educating young men in the tradition of the Basilian Fathers in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Consistent with this philosophy is that all students should experience athletics as an integral part of a well-rounded education.

SMCS Summer Camps provide an athletic avenue for young athletes from St. Michael’s and the broader community. Our programme provides youth with the skills, resources, and mentorship necessary to maximize their potential on and off the field, court or rink, while learning valuable life lessons, and developing Christian values.


Our Programme:

Everyday, campers receive several hours of instructional time in their specialized sport programme. The focus of these sessions is on improving athletes’ overall fitness levels, enhancing athletic fundamentals, and encouraging sport specific skill development.

The nature of instruction and activities also promote the development of the leadership and teamwork skills necessary for success in sport, school and the community.

We at St. Michael’s Sports Camps recognize that all campers possess different experience and skill levels. When athletes first arrive, they will be assessed based on their skills and abilities, to ensure they are placed in groups in which they are appropriately challenged. Throughout each session, coaches and counselors will provide athletes with specific and detailed feedback to help guide their on-going growth and development.


Our Staff

Coaches
SMCS Sports Camps prides itself on employing only the most qualified of coaches. Our coaches are experienced in training athletes at every level, from high school right up to the provincial and national levels, and our instructional programmes are developed and led by certified teachers.

In addition, SMCS Sports Camps guarantees that there is one coach/counselor for every 7 campers. This ensures that your child receives a level of individual instruction, assessment and care unmatched by other camps.

Counselors
Our counselors are athletically-minded high school students who attend St. Michael’s College School, or are recent graduates. They are highly qualified in all areas of safety and instructional aspects of sport. Counselors receive extensive training during staff orientation and ongoing mentorship and support from Camp Directors and Coaches throughout the summer.

Camp counselors are chosen based on their positive and respectful attitudes, their ability to respond to the needs of individual campers, as well as on the depth and quality of their prior experience working with youth.

They are models of the St. Michael’s values of “Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” in their actions and words and encourage all campers to do the same. Every staff member respects the various needs, interests, abilities, talents and goals of each camper and seeks to encourage their development by providing a safe and fun environment for them to learn and grow in.

Volleyball Camp

Volleyball Camp (Boys 11 to 15)

The Strikers Volleyball camp was designed with the primary purpose of introducing young boys, ages 11 to 15 to the sport of volleyball. The camp's curriculum allows campers to gain an understanding of requirements of playing of the sports many positions while enjoying a variety of game like activities. Campers new to the sport and those who come with previously acquired experience, will benefit from the varied levels of instructions.

Hockey Camp

Hockey Fundamentals (Boys 8+)
Players will spend 15 hours on-ice working to develop skating, passing, puck-handling, shooting, and specific positional skills. In addition, athletes will improve their conditioning, teamwork, and leadership abilities through a variety of on-ice and off-ice activities.

Advanced Hockey (Boys 8+)
Players will be grouped based on age and ability levels. They will spend 15 hours on-ice refining skating, passing, puck-handling, shooting, and specific positional skills. In addition, athletes will improve their conditioning, teamwork and leadership abilities through a variety of on-ice and off-ice activities.

Lacrosse Camp

Lacrosse Fundamentals (Boys 8+)
Open to new players, and those interested in learning the fundamentals of the sport. Players will learn the foundational stick skills of the game through a variety of passing, shooting, team-oriented drills, and one-on-one instruction. In addition to the basics of field lacrosse, the development of athleticism will be a focal point.

Advanced Lacrosse (Boys 8+)

Intended for players who have previous experience playing lacrosse that are seeking to improve their individual skill and game awareness. Players will develop ball control, shooting, passing, dodging, ground ball work, and defensive checks. Additionally, players will further their game awareness, team concepts, and athleticism.

Elite Lacrosse (Boys 12+)
I ntended for players already competing at a high level, who are looking to refine their skills on the offensive and defensive side of the field. Players will further develop their individual skill and understanding of offensive and defensive strategy through team-oriented drills as well as one-on-one instruction.

Strength & Conditioning

Elite Athlete Strength & Conditioning Camp

The St. Michael's College School Strength & Conditioning Programme was designed for motivated and driven student-athletes, who aspire to make an impact at the next level, and commit to reaching their potential by being challenged mentally and pushed to their physical limits. Our philosophy is to educate young athletes to perform a variety of movements with proper technique, and to understand, and apply nutrition/recovery strategies to maximize their physical potential.

July 4 - August 12 (6 weeks)
Ages 12+ (co-ed)


6 Weeks - $1800
4-5 Weeks - $325 per week
2-3 Weeks - $375 per week

Training
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday
*there will be no training on August 1, 2016

Yoga
Wednesday’s 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Additional On-Ice Skill Development
July: 6, 20, 27 | August 3, 10 (1 p.m.-2 p.m. & 2 p.m. -3 p.m.)


Programme Outline:

Competitive Group Training
Athletes will be divided into groups depending on their age/strength levels
COMBINE TESTING
Detailed assessment that evaluates each athlete's physical skill level

Yoga for Athletes
Focus on injury prevention while improving total body range of motion with extra emphasis on ankles, legs, hips, shoulders and core. Yoga is a great way to improve posture, stability and strength.

Nutrition Counselling
We educate all athletes on the importance of consuming proper foods/drinks in order to maximize results and performance levels.

Mental Strength Training
Focus on development of mental toughness and confidence through goal setting and mental preparation techniques.

Recovery/Treatment
Certified Athletic Therapist on site to treat all athletes and provide recovery strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for camp?
To register for St. Michael’s Sports Camps visit SMCScamps.com . On the right side of the page you will find registration forms for our various camp programs that you can download and print. Simply fill out these forms with all necessary information and attach a cheque for the appropriate amount payable to “St. Michael’s College School.” Please mail registration forms and check to:

When does programming begin and end for the day?

All youth camp programming will officially begin at 9:00 a.m. each morning and run until 4:00 p.m. Staff will be on-site between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. should drop-off or pick up be needed outside of standard camp hours.
If you require additional supervision outside of these hours please contact camp staff and we will do our best to make the necessary accommodations within reason.


Are food/beverages provided?
Campers are expected to bring their own food and beverages to enjoy throughout the day. It is suggested that campers bring refillable water bottles in order to take advantage of the water fountains that we have on site.

There are light snacks and beverages available in the vending machines located in the St. Michael’s Arena should your child need to purchase additional food or drink. Due to liability issues, campers are not allowed off-site throughout the day.

Is my child the appropriate skill level to participate in camp programming?
Our camp programmes are designed to accommodate participants of a variety of experience and ability levels. Our coaches and counselors are trained to provide individual support and coaching to athletes based on their skill level and needs.

To allow for this, participants will be grouped with peers based on age and ability as much as possible, and will progress through a variety of skill stations, drills and games designed to appropriately challenge them and encourage their growth and development.


Can my daughter register in St. Michael’s Youth Camps?
At this point in time SMCS Sports Camp is open only to males.

Will equipment be provided by the camp?
Athletes are expected to have all the equipment necessary to participate in the sport for which they are registered. Should you have any questions about equipment needs prior to your arrival please do not hesitate to contact camp staff.

If you are unable to attain the equipment necessary for your child to participate, please contact SMCS Sports Camp Staff and we will do out best to accommodate your child’s needs.

Can my child leave their equipment on-site over night?
We ask that each child take their equipment home with them at the end of each day’s program. Other accommodations can be made with the Camp Director in cases where this proves to be too difficult or burdensome.

Facilities

The Summer Academy is operated through the beautiful St. Michael’s College School campus, located at the corner of Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West, and is easily accessible by car and public transit.

Campers have full access to the school’s state of the art athletic facilities to ensure an elite training environment.

Athletic facilities include:

  • The Eugene Melnyk Sports Field, encircled by a 400 metre rubberized track, is surfaced with FIFA Recommended 1 Star rating artificial turf
  • The Enzo Montemurro Fitness Facility is equipped with a variety of strength and conditioning equipment
  • The historic St. Michael’s Arena, a 45,000 square foot, single-pad facility with an ice surface of 180 x 80 feet
  • A 10,000 square foot double gymnasium
