Debate Club
This past weekend, your St. Michael's College School Sr. Debate team competed in the 2011 McGill University Debating Championships in Montreal, the most competitive high school tournament in the nation. With 108 teams competing, the team faced off against some of the best debaters in Canada, battling out resolutions such as "this house believes that parents should not lie about the existence of Santa Claus", and "this house would ban media from courtrooms". The pairing of Jonah Macan and Nestor Maslej put on a sagacious performance, finishing an outstanding 19th. They were very closely followed by the pairings of Matthew Gubasta and Vittorio Pirone, William McNee and Robert De Santis, Liam Mather and Ian Tramble, Andrew Mazzanti and Jonathan Palozzi, and Dominic Naimool and Michele Di Leo. Nestor Maslej led the way as the top St Michael's speaker, placing 42nd in a field of 216 debaters. The team enjoyed Montreal bagels and a hearty meal at the famous Schwartz's smoked meat deli, and had a great time experiencing life at McGill. Special thanks to Mr. Mancuso for accompanying the team to Montreal, and to Mr. Vella for assisting with registration.
Social Justice Club
There is a Social Justice Club meeting on Tuesday after school in Room 213.
Sr. Volleyball
Last weekend, your Sr. Strikers traveled to Mississauga to play in their last tournament of the season before their playoffs and OFSAA. After the 5 game pool play, the Strikers' perfect 10 and 0 record would get them a bye from the pre quarters and match up with UCC in the quarter-finals, where the Strikers made quick work of the Blues. In the semis the Strikers played host school Mississauga Secondary, and were able to avenge their Showcase loss of the previous weekend by defeating the Lions 2 sets to 1. In the finals, the Strikers played Rigiopolis Notre Dame and were once again able to defeat a team that had defeated the Strikers in their own gym. With the tournament victory in hand, the Strikers now set their sights on a 3rd CISAA league championship in a row. The semis takes place on Friday at 3:00 p.m. in our gym. Come and support your Strikers.
U14 Volleyball
On Saturday in Aurora, your U14 Strikers faced a strong team from UCC in semifinal action. Led by the hitting of Thomas Mienkowski, Tariq Sani, Jon Donville and Matt Keresteci, our boys were able to dominate the opposition with aggressive, attack-volleyball. The serving and setting-hustle of David Martino was the clincher. The boys won three close sets 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22. The boys earned their way to the finals against SAC, where they were less successful, but their finish as league finalists represents a real achievement of which we can all be proud. Congratulations boys!
Jr. Volleyball
The Jr. Blue Strikers competed in their final tournament of the year on Friday, entering the 12-team York Mills Classic. While the Strikers had a slow start, they improved throughout the day, not only coming first in their pool, but getting ranked #1 after pool play because of point differentials. After an easy quarter-final, the Strikers upset tournament favourites, Don Mills, and then went on to defeat UTS 3-2 to win the tournament. Lucas Di Fiore was named tournament MVP. The Strikers practice at 3:00 p.m. today.
Sr. Football
The Sr. Kerry Blues season came to an end on Saturday as they lost their semifinal game to the visiting St. Andrew’s Saints. The Kerry Blues finished with a 6-2 record. The lone Kerry Blue touchdown on Saturday was scored by Alex Zulys, on a pass from Max Townsend. A thank you goes out to all the graduating the graduating players who have contributed so much to the Kerry Blue football program.
The players are reminded to hand in their equipment after school today.
U14 Soccer
The U14 Azzurri hosted the CISAA Finals this past Saturday. In early morning semifinal play, St. Mike's faced Upper Canada College. The teams battled through back and forth play in the first half. In the second half, St. Mike's started controlling the play and Tristan Stephen netted the winning goal. St. Mike's moved on to the finals only to play their arch rivals St. Andrew's College. St. Mike's went ahead 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Noah Walman. In the second half, Kevin Timachy scored two goals to put the game out of reach for St. Andrew’s. With the 3-0 victory over SAC, St. Michael's won the CISAA U14 title for 2011. Congratulations team! The team came together to overcome the odds with our regular goalie injured and attacking mid-fielder out sick. Filling in for goalie with a very strong performance was Jason Koot. There will be a team get-together after school on Thursday to celebrate the win. Congratulations!
