The Arts

The Arts program at St. Michael’s College School encompasses the Departments of Music, Media and Visual Arts, with Drama activities offered in the extra-curricular program. In the Basilian Fathers’ tradition of educating the whole person, the Arts program plays an important role in providing students with an avenue to develop a sense of culture, creativity, leadership, and independence.

The Music Department offers students of all grade levels and ability an opportunity to learn to play a band instrument as well as to study the theory and history of music. Students are encouraged to learn and utilize the most recent computer technology to compose, edit, and record their own pieces. St. Michael’s offers its students several options of bands and ensembles which perform for public audiences. Each year, the Music Department is well represented at various music festivals through the participation of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and both the Senior and Junior Jazz Ensembles. Special trip bands are created for each grade to offer the students enriched performance opportunities by participating in an international tour to destinations such as Chicago, New York, Florida, and Europe. Students can also participate in our Drumline – a unique marching percussion ensemble for students of all grades and musical backgrounds.

St. Michael’s offers high-quality Media Arts programming. The Media Arts course encourages exploration in developing new skills, techniques and understanding of various software media. Courses are studio-based in well-equipped facilities and utilize video, audio and other media to offer students an intense educational program. Through hands-on experience, with a special focus on portfolio development and current arts practices, students learn to combine practical, theoretical, and critical skills to develop their own unique voice as artists, creators, and arts enthusiasts.

Visual Arts at St. Michael’s consists of a wide spectrum of styles and techniques from across the globe. Students develop knowledge and skills through industry-related assignments in media and digital art, as well as the more traditional skills of painting, sculpture, and drawing. Visual Arts students are taught about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts.

The Dramatic Arts celebrate a long history at St. Michael’s. Each year a lavish Broadway-style musical is presented at a theatre off campus during the month of February. Smaller drama productions occur on campus and are presented in the Lecture Hall.

Celebration of the Arts Week is held each spring at St. Michael’s to appreciate and honour the achievements of our students. During this week, the Lecture Hall is converted into an Art Gallery and the cafeteria becomes “Club Blue Note”, our own version of a jazz club.

Our musical and dramatic performances are showcased in the Centre for the Arts, a state-of-the-art, 450-seat theater. The facility was completed in Spring 2010.
