Athletics

Consistent with the philosophy and tradition of the Basilian Fathers, St. Michael’s College School believes that all students should experience athletics as an integral part of a well-rounded education. The school motto of ‘Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge’ is at the heart of student life at St. Michael’s College School, and athletics is a big part of it. Cardinal George Flahiff, a Basilian priest, renowned professor of history, and Superior General of the Basilian Fathers, spoke and wrote about sport and education. He observed that humankind gives glory to God when every human talent is actualized. Sport comprises part of the spectrum of human activity where God-given talents may be fully developed.

The Athletics programme at St. Michael’s College School has a long and storied tradition of success,

and remains faithful to its four key pillars of Respect, Commitment, Integrity, and Excellence. The goal of the programme is to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to wear the M and to respect our great tradition.

Our membership in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) allows our teams to compete with students in like-minded schools. This season schedule is undertaken in addition to each team’s tournament and exhibition games. St. Michael’s also offers several opportunities for our students to compete in various intramural sports. We strongly encourage each SMCS student to participate in the interscholastic or intramural athletics programmes.

Athletics provides a tremendous avenue for our students to develop their talents, while instilling in them a sense of pride and attachment to the tradition of the school, as well as a commitment to the greater St. Michael’s College School community. It is through their athletic pursuits on the playing field, courts, or in the arena that we feel our student-athletes learn valuable life lessons which help develop the Christian values that we expect of a St. Michael’s Man.
