Five Fast Facts: Spring Music Concerts

The month of May at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is dedicated to celebrating the arts, and this year’s Spring Music Concerts promise to once again be a highlight you can’t miss.

The annual concert series is a celebration of the accomplishments of our music students and will showcase the many ensembles offered at SMCS over three evenings.

SMCS Spring Music Concerts 2023

On Tuesday, May 14, the school will feature the Grade 9 Beginner and Advanced ensembles, the Jazz Ensembles, and the 70-member Boston Trip Band. Then, on Thursday, May 16, the Sr. Concert Band will share the stage with the Sr. Choir from Holy Name of Mary College School (HNMCS), along with performances from the Drumline and the Grade 10 Band. Finally, on Tuesday, May 28, the 85-member Grade 8 Concert Band, the Drumline, and the Grade 10 Band will be featured.

“It is always a source of pride and inspiration to me to reflect back on our concerts in November and witness the incredible growth of all our young musicians over the past several months,” says James Oatt, Head of the Music Department. “This is especially true of our Grade 8 and 9 classes, who are now performing complicated arrangements they would not even have dreamed of tackling back in the fall when many of them only knew how to play five or six notes.”

SMCS students will also be treated to a special concert on the morning of Wednesday, May 15, featuring the Sr. Concert Band and Sr. Jazz Ensemble.

“While I am tremendously proud of all our musicians, I am particularly proud of our graduating music students who have seen the journey through to the end,” says Oatt. “These young men have grown incredibly close through this shared experience and draw immense satisfaction from creating high-quality music together… Their own brotherhood of sound and emotion.”

Here are five highlights to look forward to at the concerts:

  1. The May 16 concert will conclude with a finale of music from Disney’s Encanto performed by the Sr. Band and the HNMCS Sr. Choir.
  2. The Boston Trip Band, featuring 70 students from Grades 8-10, will end the May 14 concert. Get ready to Dance the Night away, complete with a disco ball!
  3. The Sr. Band will perform music from Star Wars: The Force Awakens accompanied by a video from the movie.
  4. May 28 will see our largest ensemble as the 85-member Grade 8 Concert Band takes the stage.
  5. Gershwin’s epic Rhapsody In Blue will be performed by the Sr. Concert Band, featuring the famous clarinet opening and piano solo.
