At the beginning of April, a group of SMCS students from Grades 9-12 and teachers travelled to England and France to take part in the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
Highlights of the trip included a memorial service hosted by the High Commissioner at the Canada Waters Monument in London, visits to Faubourg d’Amiens and Beny Sur Mer Canadian War cemeteries, a visit to the Juno Beach Centre and the Beaumont Hamel Memorial, and the Vimy 100th anniversary ceremony held on April 9. One particularly moving experience was the visit to the grave of Private J.A. Gates, an SMCS alumnus who was killed at the age of 21 on September 10, 1918.
The entire trip was a very memorable experience, providing our students with an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many soldiers in defense of freedom.
