Congratulations to the Varsity Blue Raiders Basketball Team on capturing their third OFSAA Championship in five years (2013, 2015, 2017) in North Bay, March 6-8, 2017.
Hosted by Nipissing University and Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario, the Blue Raiders entered the provincial championship tournament as the #2 seed. Day 1 and 2 witnessed convincing wins by St. Michael’s over Collingwood (80-42) and Thomas A. Stewart (76-24) to advance the Blue Raiders to a quarter-final game versus #7 seed St. Marcellinus. A dominating 20-11 first quarter paced St. Mike’s to a 54-33 win and a spot in the final four. In the semi-final, St. Michael’s faced the #3 seed Pine Ridge Pumas and again was bolstered by an impressive first quarter that led to a strong 63-45 win.
The OFSAA Championship Gold Medal game featured St. Michael’s against the #1 seed St. Benedict Saints from Cambridge, Ontario. The Blue Raiders strong early play led to an impressive 20 point lead going into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, St. Benedict’s guard Zubair Seyed hit seven three pointers to give his team the lead before St. Mike’s forward Atik Gilao answered with two clutch free throws with 1.9 seconds left to secure a historic 71-70 victory.
