During the COVID-19 pandemic, many regular events at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) have had to either be cancelled or postponed. Others have been restructured to an alternative online format. Thanks to the support of many, the bi-annual Alumni Networking event, hosted by the SMCS Alumni Association, was able to quickly transform itself into a new initiative --- the Alumni Information Series.
“Since the pandemic, there has been an influx of calls and emails to the Alumni Office about the well-being of current students,” says SMCS Alumni Association President, John P. O’Neill ’86, who will be the event host. “We worked closely with the school’s Alumni Office to switch our focus for the evening and address many of the questions we are getting.”
The inaugural session of the Alumni Information Series is set for Tuesday, May 19, and will broadcast to alumni worldwide via a Zoom session commencing at 6:30 p.m. SMCS Principal, Mr. Jamie McKinnon, will be the evening’s guest speaker, and provide insight on how St. Michael’s College School has adapted to online learning.
“We are grateful to have Mr. McKinnon kick-off the first-ever Alumni Information Series,” says Kimberley Bailey, Director of Advancement. “He is the perfect person to share the journey of our students during COVID-19 with our alumni around the globe.”
The goal of the Alumni Information Series is to engage former students and give them a space to gather online while providing interesting information to the largest constituent group at SMCS.
“During these unprecedented times, it is extremely important for alumni to continue their work of supporting each other and the school,” says O’Neill. “This is a great opportunity to virtually continue the engagement that occurred through our in-person mentorship and networking events. Our goal is to stay engaged, so we don’t miss a beat when we come out on the other side.”
“Every interaction with a fellow alumnus has the potential of changing lives. Either our own, the alumnus you’re engaging, or the lives that can be changed by putting our collective minds together,” says O’Neill. “By providing an online event, we can reach our alumni worldwide and offer them a platform to be involved when normally distance would be an issue.”
Currently, the Alumni Association is planning to hold at least two additional sessions as part of the Alumni Information Series on topics such as financial implications and entrepreneurship during a pandemic.
Alumni are encouraged to submit ideas for future topics by emailing Stephanie Nicholls, Alumni & Special Events Officer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
