An evening discussing the topics of hiring, contracts, and terminations led to another successful St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Alumni Information Series on Wednesday, December 16.
Anthony Panacci ’05 joined Matt Montemurro ’05 for an hour-long Zoom session. Panacci, a lawyer at Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP, helps employers with every aspect of their labour employment needs.
“The combination of Anthony’s thorough understanding of employment law and the audience’s insightful questions made for some key takeaways from tonight’s event,” says Andrew Rick ’15. “The event was very insightful and spoke to both employees and employers from all industries.”
During the event, Panacci shared the importance of employers having the proper policies and documents in place to protect not only the employer but also the employees. Panacci shared examples of what cannot be discussed during an interview, even as simple as a shared cultural background. He also discussed best practices around making job offers in a digital world as well as explaining the different termination structures that are available to employers.
The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session from a diverse group of alumni in attendance, where Panacci answered questions on non-compete contracts and how they are treated in the courts.
“I found the presentation very informative and I was pleased that I attended,” shared first-time attendee Dom Frascà ’69. “It surely gave me a perspective of the challenges facing us when we need to hire an employee or begin a termination process.”
Launched in May 2020, the Alumni Information series, a collaborative effort between the Alumni Association and the school’s Alumni Affairs Office, has now hosted five successful virtual events. Plans are underway to continue the initiative in the new year with a variety of new topics.
