Call it tradition with a twist!
Each spring, once the final games have been played --- during the homestretch of the academic year --- the achievements of student-athletes at St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) are acknowledged and celebrated.
This occasion is usually held in the appropriately-decorated SMCS school gym.
Attendees include: nominees, award recipients, their parents and family members, award presenters, teacher-coaches, athletic therapists, and volunteers, among others.
The evening begins with dinner and mingling, followed by speeches, award presentations and plenty of photo-taking!
This deep and meaningful school tradition has been an annual ritual since the 1950s.
On May 22, 2020, for the first time in the more than 60 years of this event’s existence, the scene will shift when SMCS presents its inaugural Virtual Athletic Banquet.
“We live in a golden era of capturing and sharing special moments,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics. “Memories are a click away, which makes planning a virtual athletic banquet such a natural fit in these times.”
"The Annual Athletic Banquet is a very important event in the lives of the student-athletes at St. Michael’s College School,” adds Frank Trentadue ’84, Director of Student Affairs, and the longest-serving coach on staff.
“A school steeped in tradition and in excellence like St. Michael’s must dedicate this single event to recognize and celebrate the proud moments in the lives of the student-athletes, and their respective families and coaches,” says Trentadue, who has previously coached hockey, soccer, football, and track and field. “Realizing that participation in sport gives each student the opportunity to fully develop his God-given talents. For 30 of my 31 years at St. Michael’s, I proudly wore the double blue while creating positive memories for each athlete and hoping to pass on important life lessons through sport.”
Co-curricular activities, including athletics, are key components of the school’s educational approach, which is based on the Basilian model of teaching --- anchored in educating the mind, the body, and the spirit.
The SMCS Athletics Programme includes:

“Although many things have changed in recent months, we continue to celebrate the academic, philanthropic, and co-curricular successes in the St. Michael’s community,” says Frescura. “Even while conducted virtually, our classes, activities, and festivities continue to provide the fellowship so vital our school.”
