First-Hand Experience: Why Shadow Days are Popular

Researching the ‘right fit’ when it comes to choosing a middle or high school for a child may require different types of tools or experiences. The ‘Shadow a St. Michael’s Student Experience’ or Shadow Day is increasingly a popular option for many prospective families considering St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) for their son.

“Today’s families very much involve their sons in decisions that impact their education and future,” says Kim Celotti, Admissions Assistant at SMCS. “The Shadow Day experience allows applicants a first-hand and very interactive experience of what a day-in-the-life of a St. Michael’s student is all about,” she says, adding, “I truly believe it is a fantastic opportunity for prospective students and is essential to the family’s research and decision.”

A total of six Shadow Days will be held at SMCS by the end of the 2019-20 academic year. That’s one more than the previous year. The initiative has grown in impact and importance since it was introduced at SMCS in 2016.

“Shadow Days are a great way for us to showcase the school as a whole,” says Chris De Piero, Associate Director of Admissions at SMCS, who participated in his first such experience last fall.

“It is really an integral component of the Admissions process. We are hopeful that this process goes from Open House, to personal tour, to Shadow Day experience, to application,” he says.

One aspect of De Piero’s role is organizing SMCS Student Ambassadors who will host each prospective student for the day.

“They are extremely eager to act in that capacity in their showcasing of their school,” he says.

Celotti, who oversees much of the organization of each Shadow Day says the interaction between visiting students and SMCS Ambassadors is impactful.

“Many of our ambassadors are themselves new students to the school this year,” she says. “Through observations and conversations with the ambassadors, I see first-hand how they have embraced daily life and community here at St. Michael’s and want to share that experience with their guests. Many of them have told me that they remember their Shadow Day experience last year and want to give back and provide that same wonderful experience to prospective students.”
