New Faculty and Staff Join SMCS for 2021-22

St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) is excited to welcome each of our new faculty and staff members to the SMCS community.

New Faculty

John Mandawe - new facultyDr. John Mandawe – Core, Math Teacher
Dr. Mandawe has an Honours Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from York University as well as his Bachelor of Education from Western University. He earned his PhD in Biotechnology from the RWTH Aachen University in Germany. Dr. Mandawe has been a guest teacher at SMCS since the spring of 2019. He has also worked as a science teacher in England and a lecturer at Stanmore College in Middlesex.
Amy McLennan - new facultyMs. Amy McLennan – Music Teacher
Ms. McLennan earned her Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary and her Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University. She has been involved with independent school music programmes in Calgary and Richmond Hill for nearly 15 years. Ms. McLennan has studied conducting at an advanced level at both The Juilliard School in New York, as well as the LA Conducting Institute. She has conducted beginner, intermediate and senior levels ensembles, earning dozens of regional awards and multiple Gold and Silver awards at Musicfest Canada.
Antoinette Morgan - new facultyMs. Antoinette Morgan – Interim Student Wellness Officer (Maternity Leave)
Ms. Morgan received her Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, Master of Arts from York University, and earned a Bachelor of Social Work (distinction) and Master of Social Work from Dalhousie University. She has worked in social services and social work for over 20 years with St. Clement’s School, the York Region District School Board (YRDSB), Assaulted Women’s Helpline and Senior Safety Line, and Toronto Social Services. Ms. Morgan has also won awards focusing on student success from the City of Markham and YRDSB.
qatipi - new facultyMs. Ismete Qatipi – Math, Science Teacher (Part-time)
Ms. Qatipi completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Albania and her Master of Public Administration at the University of Tirana in Albania. She attended the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto and became a member of the Ontario College of Teachers in 2013. Ms. Qatipi has been teaching in the GTA for over 10 years and is teaching Grade 10 math and science at SMCS on a part-time basis this year.

New Staff

Lori-Anne Hastings - new staffMs. Lori-Anne Hastings – School Nurse
Ms. Hastings has a Bachelor of Science from Ryerson University and a Nursing Diploma from Seneca College. She has been in healthcare for over 35 years working for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. For the past 14 years, Ms. Hastings was working as a nurse in an independent school evaluating student health concerns and working with school administration, families, and other healthcare professionals.
Mr. Vincent Apreda – Plant Operator
Mr. Apreda joined the Facilities Team this year. He has worked in building maintenance for six years with Metrus Properties and brings ample experience in customer service.
Sheldon OttayMr. Sheldon Ottay – Safe Officer
Mr. Ottay brings six years of security experience in a variety of roles. He has experience working with youth as a volunteer with the Big Brother Big Sisters program as well as the Kids Now Mentoring Program. Mr. Ottay is also a current volunteer with the Mississauga Food Bank and Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Andrei Petrochenkov – Safe Officer
Mr. Petrochenkov has over 15 years of combined experience in law enforcement and security. He has also worked with youth as a wrestling coach and fitness instructor.

Returning Faculty

Ms. Vanessa Iaboni – Core, English Teacher
Ms. Iaboni has spent the past year working with the English department while Ms. Kristy Onyeaju was on her leave of absence. This year, she is joining SMCS again and will teach English in Grades 7 and 8 as well as religious education.
