A special milestone will be marked this month when the St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) Blue Strikers Volleyball Showcase celebrates its 15th anniversary.
“It has grown into one of the most competitive tournaments in the province,” says Alain Arseneau, Physical Education Department Head science teacher, and volleyball coach at SMCS. “It is very important for OFSAA seeding.”
“The two-day tournament hosted at SMCS will feature eight teams and more than 100 players from across Ontario competing at the senior level.
“It’s always great to showcase the highest level of volleyball to the rest of the student body,” says Alex Frescura ’92, Director of Athletics at SMCS. “It’s one of the highlights on the high school provincial calendar. Typically, all of the eventual OFSAA medalists are at this event,” he says.
The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) represents approximately 18 regional school athletic associations across the province.
SMCS has won the tournament once in 2010, also claiming the consolation bracket in the last two years.
Arseneau says the tournament also offers benefits for volleyball players who are not competing.
“With two U14 teams and a Junior team, it’s a wonderful opportunity to engage these Grade 7-10 student-athletes with scoring, linesperson, and support duties in an event they will hopefully be competing in future years.”
The St. Michael's College School Varsity Blue Strikers Volleyball Showcase runs October 18 and 19 in the SMCS gymnasium.
