With the start of a new academic year, St. Michael’s College School (SMCS) would like to welcome the following new faculty and staff members to our community.
Caroline Freibauer - Head Librarian
Ms. Freibauer received a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University. In 2001, after more than a decade in journalism, she transitioned to education where she worked as an English teacher and later, a teacher-librarian.
Caitlin Gaffney - French Teacher
Ms. Gaffney has a Master’s in French Linguistics from the University of Toronto and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in French Language and Linguistics from Western University. She is also working on completing her Doctorate in French Linguistics at the University of Toronto.
Vanessa Iaboni - English Teacher (maternity leave)
Ms. Iaboni holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English and History from the University of Toronto as well as a Professional Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Edinburgh. She joins the English Department this year, filling in for a maternity leave.
Alexander Zappone - Core Intermediate Teacher
Mr. Zappone earned his Honours Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in the concurrent stream. He has also taught at SMCS as a guest teacher over the past couple of years (2017-18).
Kaion Julien-Grant ’14 - Safe Officer
Mr. Julien-Grant is currently working towards completing his Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics at St. Francis Xavier University. He is also a member of the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes football team and is joining our security team this year.
John Connelly - Director of Student Affairs
Mr. Connelly has been appointed the new Director of Student Affairs. Connelly joined the SMCS faculty in 2012 as an English teacher and later joined the Student Affairs Department as a Guidance Counsellor in 2017.
Kevin Shaughnessy ’00 - Guidance Counsellor
Mr. Shaughnessy joins the Student Affairs Department as a Guidance Counsellor this year. Previously, he had been teaching the Core Intermediate programme and Law and has been at SMCS since 2007.
Peter Zavodny ’97 - Math Teacher
Dr. Zavodny returns to SMCS after a sabbatical in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where he lived for a year with his family while teaching math through a STEM curriculum at the Colegio Americano de Puerto Vallarta.
